how am i going to be an optimist about this?
[Almost as soon as the trial lets out, Tarrlok kind of... tears off to the kitchen, because he's mildly concerned that he's going to experience an adrenaline crash before he even starts cooking, and so he begins! He starts on some tea, marinating some beef for kebabs... but he feels like he's forgetting something...
...
OH SHIT. HE FORGOT TO PUT NOTES OUT OKAY FUCK HANG ON LET HIM REHASH SOMETHING HE THOUGHT WAS FUNNY AND SHOVE IT UNDER PEOPLE'S DOORS BEFORE ANYTHING BURNS]
FOOD IN EAT PLACE
[okay whew he makes it back to the kitchen. And so does Yuri at some point, actually! So... Tarrlok will be getting kebabs ready for everyone, since he was hungry for them, Yuri confirmed, and Cabanela said he'd have whatever he'd have. Speaking of, Cabanela shows up to make some chicken soup! And Yuri makes curry, teriyaki chicken, and steamed vegetables. So there's a little something for everyone. The food that gets put out isn't super fancy, but it's nice, and there's tea just like Elda wanted.
So have at, then!]

No, I believe you. [She smiles, even, though it's just a small one.] You have the same type of selfish mindset that I do... It's a risk worth living for rather than dying for, if that makes sense, and when you have your mind made up you'll do whatever it takes.
[Rin says it like it's a good thing, and to her it very much is. Sometimes she wonders if it's wrong to think that way, but she can't change her personality.]

More or less, yes. I've long been accustomed to making decisions that stand the greatest chance of ensuring my survival. In that moment, I trusted my ability to successfully disarm her more than the chances we had of talking her down.
[...]
Old habits die hard, I suppose. This is about us now, though. I need to keep reminding myself that.

[She's quiet for a moment, tilting her head. Considering. Then:] If this is too nosy, you can tell me to butt out, but what were you thinking of?
no subject
"Thinking of"...?
no subject
[Who or what he wanted to protect besides his own life, basically.]

[He considers it, because a lot was going through his head at the time.
There's a subtle shift in his expression for a second, but it disappears just as quickly.]
Admittedly, my own self-preservation was the first thing that came to mind. Like I said, bit of a habit. But...I don't know, you guys have been surprisingly decent. Better than most of the people I've worked with in the past, that is for certain. I figured I could at least give you a heads up in the event that Kyrie attempted to go on a rampage with that crossbow.
[And then Luca got himself shot but details. Either way, Rideaux does sound truthful about what he said, but it's...not exactly the full reason. That would delve into "butt out" territory.]

The people you've worked with must have been real pieces of work, if you can say something like that. That's a lot of pressure you're putting on us, but there's nothing for it. I guess I'll do my best to live up to your expectations.

[Of course, said coworkers would say it's Rideaux who is the piece of work, which is not wrong either. But Rin's getting Rideaux's perspective, and it is a very bitter one.
...he waves a hand dismissively, and takes a sip of his drink.]
While I'm flattered that you care about my expectations, I think you have bigger pressures to concern yourselves with.
[...to reference an interaction earlier in the week:]
Besides, I already know convincing you can be.

Convincing that man to let us walk out of here, much less bringing back the others, isn't going to be as easy as getting him to use a silly straw.

Though I'm glad that you didn't. I would prefer not to be reminded of that day.

Drat. [This is said jokingly.] I won't commission Adelina to draw up a portrait for me, I guess.
[Aside from his reaction to her guesses the week before that, he never did tell her why he was so broken up. The expression she gives him now isn't probing, however.]
Normally I'd ask if you were doing better now, but no one is at the moment. But you should get what I mean. [A hand wave.] Better aside from everything that happened today.
no subject
[He's managing, to put it in a better way. What he found out that day really did break him for a time, but he had help with picking up the pieces. Because of that and everything that has happened recently, he doesn't feel as guarded about talking about it now.]
Do you recall when you made a guess at my dreams? You were much more on point than I led you to believe.
no subject
[I MEAN. She kind of guessed she was closer than not from that.]
no subject
All right, fair. [Maybe he WAS a little obvious...] The point is, your guess was actually spot-on. And it did not turn out in my favor, obviously.
