WEEK 5.
Tabitha Smith, Sigrun Eide, and Solf J Kimblee are all dead. Regardless of what you think of the trial or the events leading up to it, there's no denying that you can feel the dent in your numbers now. After all, ten people are gone now. It may be hard, but all you can do is keep going. Saturday is given to regrouping and sleep; come Sunday morning, the clock chimes the hour at seven o'clock and there are no dead bodies to be found, so it can be assumed that all of you are safe for the time being. That said, you'll be feeling a little groggy when you wake up; it seems you've regained something that you didn't realize you'd lost... What with Jericho's excitement at the last trial, it's evident now more than ever that the new floor that's opened up to you is a gift, a reward for a job well-done. Because while surviving is something that you'll continue to try to do of your own merit...well. Let's say that he's so, so very proud of you. PARTICIPANTS REMAINING: 23 |

[OOC: Welcome to week five of Trustfell! Feel free to make as many top levels as you'd like and tag out to other characters! This post is for all of your interactions this week... at least until the weekend. Don't forget to save those threads for coins and the activity check!
If you'd like to get in contact with the Coordinators, you can do so through private meetings with Alena!]

[Hibiki slides into the stool so obediently. It's clear who the teacher is her. She notices the trees now...woah.]
How'd you make all these? Is this, um, mage stuff?
[She's certainly heard the word enough times now!]
no subject
My father made it fun. [This is Hibiki, so Rin realizes she needs to keep it simple.] Magecraft is somewhat different from what most people would suspect magic to be. It's more akin to magic science. A mage has to have a thorough understanding of how things work, in other words, so we can take a shortcut.
[Which in practical terms, to get back to answering Hibiki; Rin gestures to the Sakura tree.] When I was little, I used to practice with real crystals, growing and shaping them. An experiment like this is built on a similar but different process, but anyone can do it.

[She turns her eyes back to the sakura tree. It's really pretty; she can't help but "ooh" at it a little.]
When I was little, I was playin' on the beach with my dad instead of studyin'. So! How does it work? How'd you make this tree? They don't like the kinda crystals I usually see.

[This poor child. Rin has Hibiki's complete attention.]
Mm! I don't know if my salt will turn out as nice as yours, but I'd love to try, sensei!
[Is that a slip-up or a tease?]
no subject
[Rin's mouth twists into a cat-got-the-cream grin at her own joke, before she gestures at some of the supplies laid out.]
Sensei will guide you every step of the way, though, so I'm sure you'll do splendidly. Unless you want to make your own, we can use this cardboard I just finished cutting out... [They're in pieces, and look like they need to be pieced together, but she slides them over to Hibiki.] What colors would you like your tree to be?
[Rin reaches for some food dye she swiped from the kitchen as she asks this, and some wetted cotton swabs.]
no subject
[She's calling you spicy, Rin.]
These will be fine! It looks like you were about to use 'em anyways. [She happily takes them, picking up a piece at random and holding it in her hand.] How about red and yellow?
[Hmm, didn't someone mention those colors earlier? She wants to make a tree using the Tohsaka colors of red and gold but thinks Rin won't know why she picked them.]
no subject
Autumn colors, huh? Ooh, if we get the dye just right, we might even see a lovely orange effect, like the ones you see during a walk in the park while the seasons are changing.
[Squirting the red and yellow food dye into separate petri dishes, Rin offers the cotton swabs to Hibiki.]
Okay, these are already wetted. What you want to do is get a little of the food dye on them, and blot the tree branches. Stain them without saturating the cardboard all the way through, in other words.
no subject
[It's a bit silly but she's a bit pleased that her Tohsaka tree project is well underway. With the black cardboard stands (if the picture is anything to go by), it'll be lovely when it's all done. To that end, she's gonna use a bit more red than yellow...secretly...]
Like this? I think I did it right...
no subject
Inuki is your dog if I recall right, yes? [Rin folds her arms on the table, watching Hibiki go at it.] And yup, just like that! It's yours, so there's no wrong way to go about it. Oh, but the more dye you add, the darker the crystals will be. If you only add a little, it'll be lighter in places, like how the sakura tree turned out.
[It's got a rich pink color going on at the tips, but near the base of the lower branches it's white.]
no subject
That's right. He's a St. Bernard. He's huge! [Alright, adding a bit more red. She needs to make this tree red, not pink.] It'd sure be nice if we had some real trees in here, huh?
[Once she's satisfied, she looks at Rin expectantly.]
Alright! I think it's good. What's next, Sensei?
no subject
[There's a few other ingredients out she used to make said blue liquid, but those aren't needed!]
no subject
[Poor Hibiki. It's time to start mixing! Even she can't screw up measurements, but she does double check to make sure she hasn't messed up somewhere.]
There! I mixed it all together just like ya said! I'm sure I didn't make any mistakes, too.
no subject
Definitely don't drink it! I know you like blue, but your insides are better staying pink.
[But Rin will take the cup to examine the contents, and from the approval written on her face, yeah! You did good, Hibiki.]
no subject
[She just wanted something sweet to drink! They're so far from the kitchen, would it really kill Jericho to put a tiki lounge somewhere in here?]
Alright, what's next? I'm on the edge of my seat!
no subject
Well, I've gotten your tree set up! It should stay standing like this, with any luck. All you have to do now is take the salt solution you mixed and pour it into the petri dish.
[Rin taps the inside, so Hibiki can see it's like a little bowl.]
You know how real trees drink up water and nutrients from the ground, right? This works a lot like that.
no subject
[She grabs the solution and carefully pours it into the dish...slowly...maybe too slowly, so she tips it in a little faster. There it goes.]
But it's not a real tree, right? So what's actually goin' on?
no subject
[Rin points at the base of the tree.]
See the dark spots where the roots are getting wet? Eventually the whole tree is going to look like that, as the cardboard is wicked by the solution.
If it were water it would just dry out eventually, but what else did I have you mix in that container?
no subject
[She leans in closer to take a look, but then she winces when she's asked a question. Oh, no. A quiz.]
Um...pneumonia? There's pneumonia and salt in there.
no subject
Ammonia, Hibiki. [Rin is shaking her head, both amused and gently scolding.] We're not spreading the plague here.
no subject
[Maybe she'll read a chemistry book? Weirder things have happened.]
If we were spreading pneumonia, the tree would probably die, huh?
[? ?? ? ? She actually looks sad as she says that?]
no subject
[Rin sounds more fascinated than anything, but it's okay Hibiki! Your hypothetical tree will survive.]
Anyways, there's a lot of uses for ammonia. You've probably seen it in the laundry room without noticing; it's often used to get stains out of fabrics.
What makes it important to this project, though, is that due to its chemical composition it evaporates quickly.
no subject
[She doesn't even notice her mistake.]
So it evaporates quickly. That means it's turnin' into a gas, right? So if it's evaporatin' and the rest of the mix isn't, what does that mean?
no subject
Close! Most of the mixture is evaporating right along with it; the ammonia just speeds things along. But you're right that there's something in there that isn't. After all, its original form wasn't a liquid.
